William Tolle was born Oct 1822, son of Nancy (Applegate) and Benham Tolle. He was married first to Elizabeth Hyatt on 27 Feb 1844 in Daviess County, Indiana and they had three children. She must have died soon after 1852 because he married again on 10 Jun 1852 in Howard County, Indiana to Jane Eliza Bagwell. They had 7 more children. William died on 14 Jan 1901 in Howard County, Indiana. Jane was still living at the time of the 1920 census in Grant County, Indiana.

The children of Elizabeth (Hyatt) and William Tolle were:

GEORGE M. DALLAS TOLLE8 born in 1845 probably in Rush County, Indiana. He married sometime before 1870 to Louisa J. Burton. She was born May 1849, daughter of Violet (Bitner) and George Burton. They had 5 children surnamed TOLLE: Arminta J., Jonah P., Elmer Norman, James M. and George E. Levi married again on 7 Nov 1883 to Catherine Huldah Ladow (The marriage record gives her name as Ladow, but family members say her name was Catherine Huldah Davis). Levi and Catherine had one more child Leethel Tolle. She died in 1914. Levi died in 1933 in Burlington, Indiana.
PERRY TOLLE8 born Jun 1850 in Rush County, Indiana. He married on 13 Mar 1873 in Grant County, Indiana to Sarah O'Banion. Perry and Sarah had 2 children surnamed TOLLE: Eva May and Lucretia. 4790 WILLIAM TOLLE (John5; George Sr4; Roger3; Tobias2; Roger1)

William Tolle, son of Elizabeth (Debell) and John Tolle, was born 10 Apr 1801 in Lewis County, Kentucky. He married "Sally" Sarah D. Ringo on 13 Feb 1823 in Fleming County, Kentucky. Sally was born 28 Feb 1800, the daughter of Hannah (Rector) and Alburtis Ringo. William and Sally lived in Fleming County until April of 1849, and he is listed several times in the deed books of that place. At about that time he moved to Henry County, Iowa. He was on the special 1854 Iowa census, and the census records of 1860 through 1880. He is found several times in the deed books there, both as grantor, and as grantee. He was one of the heirs named in his father's will. Sally (Ringo) Tolle died on 26 Jun 1870. William married again on 27 Nov 1870 to Mrs Mary A. (Saunders) Brown. She was the widow of Reverend Cummings Brown. He was a farmer, and Vice President of the Henry County Agricultural Society. In September 1882 an article called "A Sketch of the Life & Character of this Excellant Henry County Citizen, William Tolle", was written by his friend O.H.P. Buchanan, and appeared in the newspaper there. In October of 1888, he made a trip back to Lewis County, Kentucky for a reunion after forty years. He died on 12 Sep 1894 in Henry County, at the age of 93 years, 5 months, and 3 days. He and Sally are buried at the Mt Pleasant Cemetery in Henry County, Iowa.

The children of Sarah D. (Ringo) and William Tolle were:

TOLLE, William (I3957)

4791 WILLIAM TOLLE (Jonathan4; Roger3; Tobias2; Roger1)

William Tolle, son of Jonathan Tolle, was probably born about 1769 in Virginia. He was on the tax list of Fauquier County, Virginia wih his father for the years 1790-1791, and the personal property lists for the years 1792-1803. William signed marriage bonds for three of his brothers in Fauquier County, Micajah in 1797, Reuben in 1798, and Jonathan Jr in 1798. He was also a co-signer on the marriage bond of John Runels & Caty Philips on 14 Oct 1794. William was married 19 Oct 1790 to Diana Benham in Fauquier County, Virginia. The marriage bond was made on the same date. The bondsman was James Battson and they were married by John Monroe. Diana was the daughter of Margaret (Fowler) and John Benham.

William and Diana can be found in deeds of Amherst County, Virginia 1804-1806, and he was on the 1810 census there. There was a William Tolle on the tax list of Mason County, Kentucky for 1815-1820 and again 1823-1825. This causes some confusion because he was still on the census for Amherst County, Virginia in 1820. Perhaps he owned property in Kentucky while he was still in Virginia.

Diana may have died at the birth of their son Anderson about 1816, because in Mason County, Kentucky on 21 Dec 1816 William Tolle married Rosanna Lamar. She was the widow of James Lamar, and her maiden name was Rosanna McGlothlin. Their bondsman was Bernard McLothlin. (the name may have been McLaughlin) At the time of this marriage, William signed a pre-nuptial agreement which said "Rosanna is to hold all property that she has at this time to bequeath or give it, anytime she pleases and William has no right to same by marrying her"
In Mason County, William was a witness to the marriage of George Robuck and Mary McLauglin. He was shown as father when Benham Tolle married Nancy Applegate. He signed the bond for the marriage of Elijah Tolle to Elizabeth Tolle in 1821, and he was listed as father in the marriage of Serepthey Tolle to Stally Thomas in 1827.

William may have lived his last years in Fleming County, Kentucky where he paid taxes for his step-son in 1821. A Rosannah Tolle paid taxes there in 1829. He probably died between 1827 and 1829.

The children of Diana (Benham) and William Tolle were:
JOHN TOLLE6 born 1 Dec 1791; married NANCY TOLLE, believed to be the daughter of Micajah & Mary (Batson) Tolle; he may have been the John Tolle who married Polly Arrington earlier in Amherst County, Virginia.
JONATHAN TOLLE6 born about 1793 in Virginia; married 1st Elizabeth (maiden name unknown); married 2nd Mary Ann Sharp. He went to Tennessee.
JAMES TOLLE6 born about 1793 in Virginia (possibly a twin of Jonathan); married his cousin LOVEY H. TOLLE, daughter of Reuben Hampton & Sarah (Tarleton) Tolle. He went to Illinois, and died in Missouri.
ELIZABETH/BETTIE TOLLE6 born probably in the mid 1790s. She was mentioned in an 1827 letter from her brother John Tolle to their cousins William and Alexander Tolle. According to that letter she was called Bettie, and was married to a man named Powell. A search of census records has not produced any more data about her.
NANCY TOLLE6 born 1797; married James Applegate.
ELIJAH TOLLE6 born about 1800; married ELIZEBETH TOLLE. It isn't known yet where Elizabeth fits into the Tolle family. He went to Illinois.
(a male)6 born about 1800 as listed in the 1810 census. One possibility is HENSON S. TOLLE.
BENHAM TOLLE6 born 20 Dec 1803; married Nancy Applegate. He went to Indiana
SEREPTA TOLLE6 born 1 Feb 1807; married Staly Thomas.
(a female)6 born between 1800-1810 as listed in the 1810 census. One possibility is PHOEBE TOLLE.
WILLIAM TOLLE6 born 21 Jan 1813 probably Amherst County, Virginia; married Phoebe Thomas. He went to Indiana and Missouri, and died in Nebraska.
ANDERSON TOLLE6 born about 1816 probably in Amherst County, Virginia; married Louisiana Rees

TOLLE, William (I865)

4792 WILLIAM TOLLE (Roger Jr4; Roger3; Tobias2; Roger1)

William Tolle, son of Sally Sarah (Simms) & Roger Tolle Jr, was born 2 Oct 1785 in Fauquier County, Virginia.

William appeared on the personal property tax list of Fauquier County, Virginia with his father in 1800-1803. On 15 Mar 1804 he was married to Mary/Polly Turner.

Sometime after 1804 he moved to Amherst County, Virginia where he was found in the 1810 and 1820 census. He served in the War of 1812 for six months as a Private in the 8th Regiment (Walls) of Virginia Militia under Captain Sales. In Virginia his occupation was overseeing the plantations and negroes of other men. There were recommendations from his employers filed in his old papers long after his death, and preserved by his descendants.

After 1820 he moved again, this time to Barren County, Kentucky and was on the tax rolls for 1821-1829. There is a record on file there in 1822, signed with his brother Alexander, giving power of attorney to James Dillard to handle their claim to their father's Revolutionary War claims.

Polly (Turner) Tolle died 29 Jul 1823 at the birth of their 15th child. She is buried in the Tolle-Snoddy Cemetery in Barren County.

William married again in 1825 to Martha Jane Snoddy. She was born 27 Feb 1805 and was the daughter of his neighbors Sally (Allen) and Daniel Snoddy. Three of Martha Snoddy's siblings also married three of William Tolle's children. William and Martha Jane had an additional twelve children. Although not all of William's children lived to be adults, to my knowledge, he holds the record for fathering the most children in the Tolle family.

In 1829 he mortgaged to Daniel Snoddy "1 wagon and 1 jack screw, 4 set gear, 1 pair stretchers, all the stock of horses, cattle, hogs & sheep, household & kitchen furniture, all farming utensils & plows, axes, saws, planes, augurs, chisels, a rifle gun & shot gun, all of his books and his crop of tobacco, corn, fodder & oats for the sum of $150 to be paid on or before 29 Dec 1835." Signed by William Tolle & Martha Tolle and witnessed by Benjamin A. Snoddy & Walter Bransford.

In September of 1834, William made a trip to Clay County, Missouri and back and he kept a leather bound journal describing that journey, which took two months and covered several states. One hundred and thirty years later it was found in the attic of the old farmhouse by a great-great-grandson Ray Tolle, and another of his descendants, a Tolle Family Exchange member, Donald MacDavid (Dave) Tolle, transcribed it into a nice book, and added genealogical data and photos.

William was part of a 12-man coroner's jury on 27 Oct 1838 investigating the death of an infant. He had fifteen acres of land surveyed in his name in Barren County on 7 Apr 1840, and he eventually accumulated nearly 400 acres of land in Barren County. He was enumerated in the 1840 census, and in the 1850 census he was age 64, a farmer born in Virginia.

Between 1840-1850, he carried mail on horseback from Glasgow and other points for eight years, making one trip a week. When his mail contract ended he engaged in selling clocks for a few years in Green County, Kentucky.

An ink sketch of his homestead was featured in The Tolle Family Exchange Newsletter a few days ago.

William died 27 Sep 1854 in Barren County, Kentucky. At the age of 69 he developed a cancer that caused a hard swelling of the jaw which was very excruciating and continued for several months causing his death. He was buried in the Tolle-snoddy cemetery in Barren County, Kentucky. There is a deed record in 1856 for the heirs of William involving 35 acres on Burksville Road.
The children of Polly (Turner) and William Tolle were:
A son born & died 3 Feb 1805 probably in Amherst County, Virginia.
SAMUEL BELL TOLLE6 born 24 Feb 1806 Amherst County, Virginia; married 1st Mary Ann Snoddy; married 2nd Anna Piercy.

He kept contact with his many nieces and nephews, and collected the history of the family. The descendants of Roger Tolle Jr have him to thank that so much data is available to them. At the age of 92, he died of a weak heart on 15 Jun 1927 in Barren County, and was buried in the Tolle-Snoddy cemetery.
NANCY PARROT TOLLE6 born 1 Dec 1836 Barren County, Kentucky; she never married. She died of heart disease on 24 Sep 1902, and was buried in the Tolle-snoddy cemetery in Barren County, Kentucky.

TOLLE, William (I3637)

4793 WILLIAM TOLLE (William5; Jonathan4; Roger3; Tobias2; Roger1)

William Tolle, son of Diana (Benham) and William Tolle, was born 22 Jan 1813 probably in Amherst County, Virginia. There are discrepancies about his birth date, and each record is a little bit different showing this date as anywhere from 1809 to 1850. He married Phoebe Thomas in Mason County, Kentucky on 21 Jun 1834. Phoebe, born 6 Feb 1815, was the daughter of Margaret (Metts) and Nathan Thomas, and brother of Staley Thomas. William was the grantor in a deed of Mason County, Kentucky in 1841. He appeared on the 1840 census of Parke County, Indiana. He was in Howard County, Indiana in 1850. By 1860 he had moved to Grundy County, Missouri, and was still there in 1870. There are deeds in his name in Grundy County. Sometime after 1870 he moved again, this time to Clay County, Nebraska. He was on the 1880 census there, and also on the 1885 State census. William died 13 Mar 1891 in North Platte, Nebraska at the home of his daughter Sarah Jane Prall. His obit says he was 78 years old, yet his tombstone says he was 82 years, 2 months, and 20 days at death. He and Phoebe are buried in the Eller Cemetery in Clay Center, Clay County, Nebraska. It is now an abandoned cemetery. There are also some conflicts regarding the death of Phoebe (Thomas) Tolle. One source says she died Aug 1894, but her tombstone, which was extremely hard to decifer, appeared to read 1887. There are some biographical notes and a photo of William and Phoebe in a Galt, Missouri History.

The children of Phoebe (Thomas) and William Tolle were:

CYNTHIA ANN TOLLE7 born 7 Oct 1835; married Henry Coffel.

4797 WINSLOW PARKER TOLLE (Jonathan Jr5; Jonathan4; Roger3; Tobias2; Roger1)

Winslow Parker Tolle, son of Henrietta (Harn) and Jonathan Tolle Jr, was born between 1800-1810, probably in Mason County, Kentucky. It is commonly believed that he was the son of Henrietta Harn but Jonathan's first wife Elizabeth Henderson has not been eliminated either, mainly because we do not know the exact birthdate of Winslow. The family moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky, and that is where Winslow Parker married Elizabeth Bradley on 20 Oct 1829. His father signed the bond with him, both making their mark. Elizabeth's parents are still undetermined, but there is a possiblity that her father was either Elisha or Layton Bradley. Soon after this marriage, they showed up on the 1830 census of Pike County, Missouri. They had four children, and then before 1840 Elizabeth died. Winslow was on the 1840 census of Pike County, Missouri as one male with 4 male children. On 12 Nov 1840, in Pike County, he was married again to Malinda Hughes. They were married by J.H. Hughes, Minister. His name appeared as Towl on this record. Malinda was the daughter of Mary (?) amd John Hughes. Winslow was on of six bondsman for the estate of his father-in-law, John Hughes in 1846. He moved to Pike County, Illinois sometime before 1850 where he was on the census. The two Pike Counties are opposite each other, separated by the Mississippi River, which is the state line at that point. Malinda and Winslow had six more children between 1851-1854. She died before 1854. Winslow married once again, this time on 6 Jun 1857 to Sarah J. Hall in Pike County, Missouri. The service was performed by Benjamin F. Jacobs JP, and on this record his name is spelled Toll. Two more children were added to his family. Winslow hasn't been located on the 1860 or 1870 census as yet, but the minor children of his second marriage seemed to have been scattered after the death of Melinda. Some were found in Warren County, Illinois in the homes of other people. After no trace for many years, Winslow turned up on the 1880 census of Livingston County, Missouri. He was listed as age 88 (should have been about 71) in the home of his son William, suffering from Apoplexy. He died on 11 Oct 1881 at Jamesport, in Daviess County, Missouri. He is buried in the Gee's Cemetery, in the Southwest part of Grundy County, Missouri. His tombstone is adorned with a Masonic emblem. When this compiler visited that cemetery in the Summer of 1987, I found many broken stones, and the one belonging to Winslow Parker Tolle was broken off, and lying nearly buried under the grass. Some biographical notes give his occupation as a farmer, buyer and seller of livestock, and saw mill worker. He was a member of the Christian Church. On 27 Dec 1898, his widow Sarah J. filed for a widow's pension for his service in the Indian Wars. It said that he served in Capt. Douglas's Missouri Militia and Capt. Loncoln's 4th Illinois Volunteers, but there are no dates of service shown on this record. The claim says that he died 3 May 1882. There are many conflicts in the records regarding the birth and death dates for Winslow, and his age at death. Some branches of his descendats go also by the TOLE and TOLL spellings.

The children of Elizabeth (Bradley) and Winslow Parker Tolle were:

JONATHAN LAYTON TOLLE (TOLL)7 born 18 Sep 1830; married 1st Lydia Matilda Barney; 2nd Sarah Elmira Applegate.
JAMES HENRY TOLLE (TOLE)7 (twin) born 12 Oct 1834; married Harriet Richards.
JOHN HENRY TOLLE7 (twin) born 12 Oct 1834; he may have been the one who married Mary Peters; was said to have gone to California.
